Beach Cleanup and Basic Water Safety Project- “සිදුතෙර පියසටහන්”

In a commendable effort on 26th of November, 2023, members of the Environmental Technology Society, Faculty of Technology, University of Colombo united for a crucial cause at Panadura Beach. Recognizing the dire state of Sri Lanka’s polluted beaches, driven by their commitment to environmental protection, embarked on a mission to safeguard the coastline.

Every participant understood the significance of seemingly trivial items—straws, bottle caps, fishing lines, plastic spoons, and toffee wrappers—as they meticulously combed the beach during the cleanup. More than just waste collection, the event served as a call to action, transforming participants into ambassadors for change. Their efforts aimed not only at cleaning the shores but also at raising awareness about the pervasive issue of plastic pollution and the urgent need to preserve our precious coastline.

The impact of this initiative extended far beyond the immediate cleanup. With the help of lifeguards affiliated with Panadura Police Station, participants gained crucial skills, from basic rescue maneuvers to water safety procedures, emphasizing a holistic approach to beach protection. Lively conversations and interactive demonstrations further enhanced their understanding of safety protocols.

This success was made possible through the guidance of Prof. Ranjana U.K Priyadasa, the Dean of the Faculty of Technology, University of Colombo and Dr. Poorna Piyathilaka, the Senior Treasurer of the Environmental Technology Society, the sponsorship of Eco Plasco, and the invaluable support of academic staff of the Faculty of Technology, University of Colombo and Panadura police lifeguards. As society reflects, it’s essential to honor the progress achieved. The beaches are now cleaner, communities more mindful, and the unwavering passion for environmental preservation echoes through the success of this initiative. The Environmental Technology Society extends heartfelt thanks to all participants and staff, recognizing their pivotal role in making this effort a resounding success.
