The student counseling is important for the student welfare and maintenance of student discipline. The student counselors are from academic staff representing all faculties and eight marshals. There is a senior student counselor and number of other student counselors appointed by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo. The student counselor’s office is comprised of senior student counselor and the other student counselors. Further, there is another special counselor appointed by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo to advice on the welfare and other matters relating to the Buddhist monks. The main task of the student counselor’s office is to counsel students. However, wide variety of other tasks are also undertaken by the student counselor’s office and which include issuing of identity cards, display posters and cut-outs and permits for trips, granting permission of lecture halls for extra-curricular activities (get-togethers and meetings and etc.), providing temporary hostel facilities, assisting students facing emergencies, hold special language classes for students, intervene and take necessary action with regard to student conflicts within and outside the University and take steps to prevent ragging. Further, ragging act is formed to prohibit ragging and other forms of violation in the university.
